School Events Worth Attending: Homecoming, Dances, Games, and More

Academic life gets most of the attention when people talk about high school preparation, but the events — the dances, the games, the week-long traditions — are a huge part of what makes the four years memorable. Here’s a guide to the events that are actually worth showing up for.

Homecoming

Homecoming is typically a fall tradition centered around a football game and a dance or social event. Even if football isn’t your sport and dances aren’t your scene, homecoming week usually involves dress-up days, pep rallies, and a general energy around school that’s different from a regular week. Going to at least the pep rally or the game is worth it just to experience the school spirit side of high school that you’ll remember later.

Prom

Prom is typically for juniors and seniors, though some schools allow freshmen and sophomores to attend as someone’s date. It’s a formal dance, and the build-up — promposals, getting dressed up, going out with a group — is often as memorable as the event itself. Don’t stress too much about the logistics; focus on going with people whose company you enjoy.

Games and School Sports Events

Going to your school’s games — even if you don’t play — is one of the most underrated social experiences in high school. Friday night football games, basketball playoffs, swim meets — these are shared experiences that build a sense of belonging. You’ll know more people by going. The stands are a surprisingly good place to actually have conversations.

Club and Arts Showcases

Theater productions, art shows, band concerts, and academic competitions are all public events you can attend to support friends and see a different side of your school’s community. These are often some of the most genuinely impressive events of the school year, and your classmates who are performing or presenting will remember that you showed up.

High school goes faster than anyone tells you. The events and moments you participate in are what you’ll actually look back on. Show up when you can.
